NASHVILLE, Tennessee (WKRN) – Tennessee continues to see an increase in the number of flu cases. The state is now in the CDC’s “very high” category.
Dr William Schaffner of Vanderbilt University Medical Center says they continue to see a gradual increase in influenza cases. They also continue to see an increase in influenza hospitalizations over the past two weeks. Much like COVID-19, Dr. Schaffner says your best defense against the flu is to get the vaccine.
Dr Schaffner also spoke of “flurona”. It is a combination of coronavirus and the flu. Dr Schaffner says they have not yet diagnosed any cases of flurona.
The coronavirus and the flu are from different viral families, so he says your COVID vaccine won’t protect you from the flu. Your flu shot will not protect you against COVID. So, Schaffner says you should get the vaccine against both. Studies on flurona are preliminary and ongoing.
“Vaccine scientists are already trying to figure out how to create a combined vaccine against influenza and COVID. That would be great. We would be protected against both types of viruses and would only have to roll up a sleeve, ”said Dr Schaffner.
Until that happens, Schaffner says your best defense against the flu and COVID is to get yourself vaccinated for both separately. He says get your COVID booster and your flu shot at the same time and that both vaccines at the same time will not have amplified side effects.
